Commercial vacuum cleaners generally, when compared to other types of vacuum cleaners, will have this contrasted features:

1) Extra long power cords for easy vacuuming – no need to unplug and go find a closer outlet. It’s common to have 50+ feet of power cords on a commercial vacuum cleaner.
2) Increased durability – a fancy way of saying the plastics and materials are stronger and it can take more abuse – I mean, bumps!
3) A motor with more power – thus allowing it to be used daily for hours. This is the biggest difference.;
4) More carpet care options – different tools and specialized settings for different types of carpets.
5) Allergy/HEPA filter – not a standard feature yet but fast becoming a common option. This means the unit filters the air it sucks through for allergens and other environmental variables not wanted in the air.

OK – the title is a bit misleading. I would not call a $250 vacuum cleaner “cheap” if it weren’t for the fact that so called normal vacuum cleaners are routinely sold for this much, and now, the lower end of the commercial model has crept into this price range too. For that reason alone, that makes those commercial vacuum cleaners cheap – in price, but not cheap in quality!

When the prices of the two competing types meet, you can see why one looks more expensive suddenly and yet the other suddenly looks like a good deal!

Why should I, as a consumer, pay attention to something with the word “commercial” in it being sold to consumers all of a sudden? Something here stinks of a marketing scheme…

Actually, I don’t blame you for having that thought! But the truth is, commercial cleaners are way better than household cleaners. They are far more efficient and longer lasting, stronger, and just plain more durable and all around better.

Now all things equal – actually, no, not ALL things equal, but if the price is equal – wouldn’t you want the better one?

Do you want your carpets to last a long time?

Said another way, do you want to replace your carpets anytime soon? Of course not!

If that’s the case, and it is – then you should vacuum on a consistent basis – about once or twice per week, and more if you’re in a business environment or environment with a lot of extra foot traffic. Now, if you’re at home, you should also be weary of wearing shoes and footwear in the home. This isn’t always practical but its a darn good rule of thumb to try and keep dirty shoes off the carpets. You also need to know how to clean up stains and have some good cleaning solution in the cabinet, ready to go when needed! (Otherwise you’re really asking for trouble!)

What simple rules do you know that keep carpets fresh and clean?

But the truth is – and this might make you laugh – the most PRACTICAL reason I started to appreciate commercial models was that when I worked at a cleaning company, I didn’t have to unplug and power up elsewhere to clean up a large area of carpet. It sounds silly, but you know how frustrating it gets when working a building to constantly unplug and re-plug up in order to finish your job?

This is what made me appreciate them more than anything else!
